WHAT CAN I DO DURING RECOVERY POST INJURY ?

Have you ever experienced soreness or tightness in your muscles and joints after a workout or a long day at work? It's a common occurrence, but the good news is that there are ways to alleviate the discomfort and speed up the recovery process. One of the most effective methods is to use ergonomic aides such as massage guns, foam or hard ball massage rollers, and other similar tools.


Using these tools can help promote a faster recovery process, both directly and indirectly. They can reduce soreness and tightness, promoting comfort and allowing you to focus on the next step, which is increasing strength for longevity. Whether you're recovering from an injury or trying to prevent one, incorporating these tools into your routine can be extremely beneficial.


As someone who has experienced an MCL injury, I can attest to the effectiveness of these recovery aides. Despite being advised against playing football and oz tag, I knew my joint's ability and what I could and couldn't do during my recovery process. In addition to BW and banded/weights work to condition my joints for a heavier future load, I also used massage guns, foam rollers, and massage balls to reduce soreness and speed up my recovery.


While these products are not a requirement for the recovery process, they can be incredibly helpful as aides. For example, during my MCL rehab, I had access to a massage gun with a cooling and/or heating attachment. Using it in my warm-ups and cool-downs during my rehab in sport, I found the recovery process to be more efficient, and I felt more confident with my training. This encouraged me to follow my rehab more strictly, and as a result, I was able to return to my sport after just six weeks without missing a single week.


It's important to note that recovery is a two-step process. The first step is to reduce soreness and promote comfort, while the second step is to increase strength for longevity. Incorporating ergonomic aides into your routine can help you achieve both steps more effectively. Some examples of these aides include:

  2. Foam Rollers: These cylindrical foam rollers can be used to self-massage various parts of the body to release tension and improve flexibility.

  3. Massage Balls: Similar to foam rollers, massage balls can be used to apply pressure to specific areas of the body to alleviate soreness and improve mobility.

  4. Stretching Straps: These straps are designed to help you stretch more effectively, allowing you to target specific areas of the body and achieve deeper stretches.
